Since I was diagnosed as a Type 1 diabetic in 2008, the excellent support received from the NHS has meant I have been able to continue living my life largely as I wish, albeit with slightly less chocolate.

Other areas of the world don't benefit from the same 'free' expertise and Action for Diabetics specifically supports children in South East Asia, where diabetes is even more endemic than it is in the UK.

I'm undertaking the 50 miles in 24 hours challenge across the (somewhat hilly) Peak District for a few reasons:

• to show new diabetics that diagnosis doesn't mean life in an armchair
• to raise money for a good cause that supports people less fortunate than ourselves
• ...but mainly because I like a good walk
