Douglas Macmillan Hospice (Dougie Mac) is the only hospice in Staffordshire supporting Children, Young Adults & Adults. Care is given to patients who are living with a life-limiting illness at our two sites and in the community. We also provide support for patients families and their carers.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Running this year’s Bupa Great North Run on Sunday 19th September will be somewhat different for Guy and Mark, not just the fact we will be wearing the Douglas Mac Sunflower suits, but more the point of what happens post race. Instead of heading to put our feet up and relax, we will heading past the finish line of the 13.1 mile course, and carrying on running....all the way home!!

We have called this ultra distance event 'Newcastle to Newcastle'. We aim to run approximately 30 miles per day for 7 seven days, starting in Newcastle upon Tyne and arriving back home in Newcastle under Lyme on Saturday 25th September. We will have ran around 200 miles to get home, and our final finish line will be The Brampton Park, Newcastle under Lyme. Why you may ask?

We are running this incredible challenge to raise funds for The Douglas Macmillan, and have set our target at £6,000, this financial support will be vital and would go towards nursing and care costs.

This distance is a huge challenge, even for the most experienced of runners, but we are ready to rise to it, we hope to have a support team en route with us, including a driver, and a Sports Physio, were looking for as much support from key sponsors, and the general public as possible.

By way of background, the Douglas Macmillan Hospice is a local adult only hospice established in 1973. Douglas Macmillan is an independent charity for people who are faced with cancer, and other terminal illnesses. Specialist palliative care, help and support are given to patients, their families and carers at the Blurton Hospice, in the community, and at home. The hospice do not charge for the care and help they provide, yet it costs over £8 million per year to run. That's £20,000 every day!!  It provides care and services like nowhere else in Staffordshire, pain relief and symptom management, to advice and support, respite care, terminal care, nursing care in the home, specialist therapies and bereavement care. The hospice relies on voluntary donations for more than two thirds of all of the funds required and does not receive funding from any other charities. With just 27% statutory funding, the remainder of income comes from generous support including donations, fundraising, so please dig deep, remember, every donation creates a ripple that makes a huge difference...
