Dear Reader,
I have taken on multiple projects to raise money for Meningitis Research, Make a Wish foundation and Oxfam.
So far I have completed a difficult 24 hours silence, bag packs, auctions, cake sales, and dressed up as a fairy to perform bucket collections in the underground which i would like to note was highly embarrasing.
Our most recent challenge, in a little team of 3, was to get as far away from Loughborough and back in 54 hours without spending any money on travel. The planning proved beyond difficult and we had almost given up hope and could only hope to make it to Scotland or maybe France by hitchhiking. But then a marvellous man Vince came to the rescue and along with him and so many other generous, kind-hearted and marvellous people we made it to Slovenia. We won by miles by completing the most challenges and by getting the furtherest so a true team victory. Thank you to everyone who supported us in Escape and Evade, especially James, Vince, Darren, not forgetting Uros and Ura from Slovenia. Our weekend in Slovenia was amazing and has make memories like no others
Keep looking out for easter egg hunts, fun days and more big events. We are currently looking at a massive party that will require a lot of time and intense organisation, a marthon and providing home support for theose doing challenges like climbing killimanjaro.
Meningitis can kill in a matter of hours. Meningitis and septicemia are devastating diseases, which kill 1,000 people around the world every day, many of them children and young adults. Survivors can be left with severe disabilities including multiple amputations.
Make A Wish foundation granted over 8000 wishes last year, there are over 20,000 children in the UK alone who suffer from terminal illnesses. Their final wishes can be as simple as going shopping or being able to go for bike ride, things we take for granted. It is their chance for a normal life and for their family to see happiness in their child, away from the hospital and painful treatments.
Wishes have also been found to bring families closer together (78%) and give them a greater sense of normal family life (68%).
However, the biggest impact felt by parents was on their child’s attitude and outlook on life, with 77% stating that the wish experience helped their child through a very difficult time, making them feel more positive and hopeful (68%) and bringing relief from the endless rounds of clinic appointments and invasive treatments (67%).
Alfie's Mum Kirsty said: “It was so nice to be together as a family and not worry about hospital appointments. We saw the Butlins show, went swimming, bowling, trampolining and even spent a great, if chilly, morning on the beach!”
“Ella’s disability means that she’s often treated differently, but she likes to shock people – seeing her harnessed on a trapeze doing something that no one ever thought or expected she could do was fabulous. She was so proud of herself, and it’s really boosted her confidence.”-Ella's Mum Andrea
13 year old Ella, who was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy at birth wanted to perform on a trapeze, despite being wheelchair bound Make A Wish made it happen.
“Wishes impact every single person that is a part of them,”
He’s just a brave little guy, full of life and energy.”— Sgt. Daniel Mullis, Camp Pendleton
Jorge was diagnosed with retinoblastoma - a rare cancer of the eye. His condition has critically weakened his eyesight but he still wanted the chance to experience being a solider.
One day, Lauren meets volunteers from Make-A-Wish.
She wants to give.
Lauren imagines a bunny blanket like hers for each patient in the hospital
I’ve always said ‘when I grow up, I want to be like Lauren.' I can only hope.” Lauren's mom

George was a 10 month old healthy, giggly, beautiful baby boy who we were so excited to be taking on his first holiday abroad to Tunisia with mummy, nanna and grandad. Sadly he never got to enjoy his first holiday or even know he was abroad.
Night, night our beautiful angel. I feel so truly blessed to have had you in our lives for those short, but incredible, 10 monthsLove you always and forever Mummy and Daddy xxx
For Oxfam we are focusing on the mothers appeal.
'Mothers are some of the world’s most powerful people. They feed us, teach us and protect us. Most of all, they love us, unconditionally'
We all know that mothers everywhere want the best for their children. But when every day is a struggle to feed their families, it takes almost superhuman strength to succeed. And yet, the even world's poorest mothers never, ever give up. By supporting Oxfam's Mother Appeal, you will give mothers worldwide the lift they need to use their power to change the future. Because when we lift a mother she will not only lift herself. She will lift her family and her community, generation after generation.
Mothers will only ever do the best for their children. For a mother to not be able to do the best for her child is the biggest suffering they could ever face, yet some mothers have to face this unbelievable suffering. Please help us to help them.
I don't know where I would be without my mother, do you?
Escape and Evade is the art of running away and not getting caught, however unlike a child game of tag as adults there is likely to be a lot more discomfort and highly unfavorable situations to which we must struggle through to get as far away from England and back in 56 hours without spending ANY money on transport.
Escape and Evade developed as a term for pilots such as Gavin Hopkins, who was one of many pilots shot down in wars. A short documentary on http://vimeo.com/24125789 follows the experiences of pilot Gavin Hopkins, shot down over East Germany during the cold war. Escape and Evade also refers to many stories, of success and brutally consequential failure, of attempted escapes by Prisoners of Wars and prisoners in Death or Concentration camps.
Escape and Evade is now part of an official military program: Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) that provides military personnel, Department of Defense civilians and private military contractors with training in evading capture, survival skills, and the military code of conduct.
UK Gift Aid is also doubling any donations made, so if your are second guessing whether that £2 or £5 will make a difference, stop. That £2 or £5 is worth £4 or £10, and £10 worth £20, and £15 worth £30, and £50 worth £100!
Please please please please please please please donate.
My number is 07879610265 and email is i.v.newey-13@student.lboro.ac.uk or imi-victoria.n@hotamil.com if you have any further suggestions on how you could help this cause and being that the 56hour Escape and Evade challenge is on March 24 26 and connections or help you could offer in traveling as far from England as possible would be beyond appreciation and we would forever be in your dept.
All the greatest wishes,
Imogen Newey
