Nicholas's D-Day 75 runs 75 days

D-Day 75 runs 75 days · 18 August 2019
D-Day has always resonated with me. Every year I make sure I pay my respects. This year I decided I would run 7.5 miles on 6th June as a sign of respect (it being the 75th anniversary this year). On the way home from work the next day I listened to The shores of Normandy by D-Day Veteran Jim Radford, I suggest you all listen to it. Upon listening to this song I felt like I HAD to do something to raise money for the D-day memorial above gold beach (Normandy Memorial Trust). So I decided that I would run for 75 days in a row covering at least 170 miles, the distance from Portsmouth to Normandy. I didn’t want this challenge to be easy as that wouldn’t feel right, I wanted this to be challenging, so I decided to double it to 340 miles. Again I didn’t want to take the easy way out. Closing in on the end of the challenge it was obvious I could go further so I decided to round it up to at least 400, an average of 5.33 miles per day.
In the end I ran 424.20 miles in 75 days. On the last day I pushed my to a new level and managed 40.89 miles. On the last day the thoughts of people encouraging me to push further and more importantly why I was taking on the challenge in the first place really pushed me on. I could never ever do enough to thank that generation for what they did for us. I will be forever grateful.
Just a few things before I sign off.
“ and many a mother wept that day, for the sons they loved so well.
Men who cracked a joke, and catched a smoke, as they stormed the gates of hell”
“and those of you, who were unborn, who’ve lived in liberty. Remember those, who made it so, on the shores of Normandy”
