Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

It may seem as though I’m just heading out the door to Nepal - and adding these words to let you know about my latest exploits in support of GCF, but this trip has been 15 months in the planning and has consisted of our Bosnian Mountains Cycling challenge, the Mayflower Half Marathon, trips to Ben Nevis, ScaFell, Simon’s Seat, and all the Gym/Stepping/Walking/Running/Cycling training associated with that!

I’m reigniting my Just Giving page for this latest event, at a time when Remembrance is high on the agenda - be it for fallen comrades in times of conflict or lost loved ones who are no longer with us.

Doing something for a hugely worthwhile cause like GCF is a terrific release, for me - the commitment given, by the wonderful people of Goražde to honouring the memory of soldiers who lost their lives as a part of the Royal Gloucester's Berkshire’s & Worcester's unit protecting the city in 1992-94 - being reciprocated by our efforts to repair, refurbish and equip the central school in the City and bring a lasting legacy - not just a temporary fix, but improvements that have, for example, furnished the school with language labs and text books to help improve the knowledge of English, and a sports pitch as well as other facilities to encourage those activities nominated by the children as ones they love best.

Our target in 2020 is to raise funds for 25 projects, as it is 25 years since Maurice (our inspirational GCF founder) Evelyn-Bufton and his comrades withdrew from Goražde at the end of the Bosnian war.
To this end, we will also be hosting a re-run of the 100km cycle ride across the mountains from Sarajevo to Goražde, with each of 25 riders taking ownership of a project apiece, large or small.

With such a responsibility I thought it best to start early, my personal target being to raise more than the money collected last year - which is being used to refurbish the Maths room and it’s furniture, which has not been renewed for a number of years.

The school still has a great many needs, and we hope to bring in sponsorship funding for the Technology in use, Tech tuition and for the Arts.

You can see more about GCF, photos of the activities and Maurice’s book “Donkey Mail and Bully Beef" at the gcfbosnia.org website....

... for now, I will be doing my best to post updates and photos, as I get the chance, on my trip to Everest Base Camp to meet with the Nepalese people, sample their food, culture, visit villages en route, and of course take in the fantastic scenery, all the way to 5,495 metres, asl; all I'd ask is that you please also do your best to make a contribution here, to our GCF fund, so that together we can make difference.

Thank you!

Nick.
