When i was pregnant with Oliver, we discovered there was a problem at my 20 week anomoly scan. He was swallowing amniotic fluid but it wasnt reaching his stomach and kept regurgitating back up and therefore his stomach wasnt visible on the scan. They also noticed he had a 2 vesseled umbilical chord, instead of the normal three. this can indicate to only having one kidney instead of two. Their predictions were correct, Olly only has one kidney. Our local hospital decided they didnt have the facilities or the knowledge to cater for our needs so they transferred us to Liverpool Womens Hospital where we will also be having our little Olly via a planned C section. After weeks of may scans and under close observation, the consultants decided our son more than likely has a condition known as Vacterl Association (an association of different bodily functions).
V= VERTEBRAE - Oliver was born with a tethered spine.
A=ANAL ABNORMALITIES - Oliver was born with a looped bowel in which he lives with stomas for now.
C =CARDIAC - Oliver was born with a large PDA, a suspected coarctation of his Aorta and and enlarged left side of his heart.
T - E= Trache - Eosophageal Fistula (American spelling) - Trachea and/or oesophageal problems. Oliver was born with Oesophageal Atresia (no or hardly any oesophagus which is correctly managed by an oesophagotomy in the side of his neck for drainage).
R = RENAL - Oliver was born with one kidney.
L = LIMBS - Oliver was born luckily with all his limbs and they all function correctly.
He was operated on by surgeons at Alderhey Childrens hospital a few hours after birth to produce stomas so he can go to the toilet properly, and to insert a Gastrostomy tube in to his stomach so he can be fed due to him not having a food pipe. Although Oliver is temporarily fixed, he still has numerous operations to go until he will be functioning like a "normal" child, but without these amazing Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses and other health care professionals, our son wouldnt be here today. No matter how many times we say it, the words "Thank You" are just not enough to explain or express just how thankful we are. This is why we are walking 3km around Knowsley Safari Park because we would love to give back to other children that really need it. So please, DIG DEEP! All our love, Oliver, Nikki and Matthew. xxxx
