Story
I started running properly a few years back and have become hooked! At first the prospect of running 5km non stop was so daunting but once I passed this milestone the next one started to beckon me. So, after a couple of 10km races, I upped my training to half marathon level. This was an enormous challenge! To be honest, each time I completed a half marathon I could not comprehend how anyone would be able to, or even wish to, run a full marathon. Fast forward a few months, at which the pain of the last half marathon was a fading memory, I decided to challenge myself - how hard could a full marathon really be? Realised I am not getting any younger I decided its now or never! So here I am running the Edinburgh Marathon May 26th.
I have been out training since January, gradually clocking up the miles. To date, I have run over 200 miles with my longest run being 20 miles. Some weeks the mental build up to running further than I have ever before has been the biggest challenge. In other weeks, injuries have been creeping in and I have had to work hard to keep my body moving and to function well enough to stay on track. I have (mostly) loved the training and I feel as prepared as possible for race day.
I have chosen to run for Mbedza Projects Support because they provide relief and prevention of poverty in Malawi - a developing country currently facing a catastrophic climate crisis. Mbedza Projects Support provide fuel efficient stoves for villages in the Zomba and Monkey Bay districts. These stoves use 60% less firewood which supports deforestation and saves women hours of their time daily collecting firewood. It also improves health due to them being smokeless. This project also provides villages with trees. Each household is given 20 trees to help offset the carbon footprint of the stove. The school I work for has strong links with this charity, two of my co- workers, Miss Watson and Miss Smith, went out to Malawi this Easter to see the impact this charity is having on the communities.
I am so very grateful for any donations, thank you!
