As many of you will know I lost my husband Simon to a brain tumour in May last year at the age of 50, almost exactly a year after diagnosis.

Simon's tumour was an extremely aggressive glioblastoma multiforme which has a very poor prognosis and limited treatment options. He faced his dreadful illness head on with immense courage, dignity and positivity in the face of adversity. Simon underwent a craniotomy in May 2015 at Charing Cross Hospital. He also had six weeks of radiotherapy, two different types of chemotherapy, took part in a trial and fully committed to a ketogenic diet. Simon was very well initially and ran a half marathon and a marathon whilst undergoing treatment.  Despite successful surgery to remove all visible tumour, it had returned within six months and it kept growing. It wasn't through want of trying that Simon is no longer with us - it is because this illness is underfunded in terms of research. 

Simon supported Brain Tumour Research Campaign in the last months of his life and a number of friends and former colleagues have also raised funds in his memory. I thought that I should now do the same. Simon liked a challenge so I have taken on one myself. I was lucky enough to receive a place in Ride London in the ballot. I haven't been out on my road bike since the Windsor Triathlon in June 2015 so I have a lot of training to do if I am going to be able to cycle 100 miles comfortably!

Brain Tumour Research Campaign contribute to research funds for a team of clinicians and scientists at Imperial College's Charing Cross Hospital. All donations received go directly to research projects as all administrative costs are born by the volunteers who run the charity. There are several exciting projects in the pipeline which they hope will lead to further treatment options for this devastating disease.
