IT IS DONE!
90 miles/144 km was nothing to sneeze at and I took it cautiously...There are a surprisng number of inclines on the route, supposedly 1198 metres of climbing, even though Cambridge is closer to sea level than Oxford. One hill south of Bletchley was worthy of lower alpine quality with a few false endings to throw in the boot. With 50 miles after that it was difficult to know how much `fun' to have overtaking people in difficulty. (A few did pay me back 25 miles later!). With a stop for a mug of tea and a minor repair-adjustment 55 miles in, as well as some comfort and food unwrapping breaks, total time on the bike was about 6 hours and a bit. The head-wind/breeze was consistantly against which was a bit tiresome to say the least, in the last 15 miles. However, Cambridge Council is to be commended for their bike path surfacing quality in the last few kms.
To conclude, I would like to thank everyone who sponsored me so that I had some extra motivation to push it. I would also like to thank the inventor of Ibuprofen, and my son for insisting I use my `good' bike instead of my commuter (with `that' hill, I wouldn't have made it otherwise!). Thanks again!!
And now, what I wrote previously... for archiving's sake:
--------------------------------
This could be a good ride...though I haven't specifically trained for it... just muscle memory and a bit of old knowledge to see me through. Hence: `There Will be Pain!'
The British Heart Foundation organizes it so they should be the ones to benefit from any goodwill donations.
At the moment I am still thinking of doing it on my single-speed fendered-and-racked commuter bike with baggy clothing `sails' 'but that means optimistically hoping for no-headwinds. Any donation size gratefully accepted. Go for the minimum.. its fine by me! Wish me luck. Ok... if the winds are forecast to be dead against me for 90 miles I will have to lycra up and wheel the display bike out and risk contaminating it with `outside air' !
