Highland Cross is a 50 mile duathlon (walking or running 20 miles and cycling 30 miles) across Scotland from Kintail to Beauly. The event is organised by volunteers to raise funds for charities across the Highlands. Since 1983, over £6.3m has been raised and distributed in full to deserving causes.

UPDATE FROM TEAM MANAGER

13 June 2012

After much deliberation, Nifty, Fifty and Thrifty along with their chaperones, who shall remain anonymous for their own safety, completed the 30 mile training cycle from Affric to Beauly on 5th June, skillfully negotiating the sharp downhill bends and cattlegrids to Fasnakyle.  Thrifty sped off early in his fluorescent orange jacket, leaving N & F in his dust - he didn't have time to wait around for them to hold him up!

Flatter territory after Fasnakyle and Cannich was encountered (AKA boring quipped N) with one or two watering stops along the way, kindly provided by JC Transport Services.

Up ahead loomed the much talked about "Aigas Brae" for N & F while reports were coming in that T had already reached Beauly (in 1hr 50m) and was heading back to meet N&F.   N&F glided up the brae with lots of coaxing from their Mr Motivator and F started to have flashbacks to 18 years ago when she remembers seeing a mirage of firemen there!  (Dehydration it's also known as!)

It wasn't long before Thrifty appeared on the horizon to aid Nifty and Fifty the last few miles to Beauly - he was more than impressed with their progress and a little disappointed that he only managed to beat them by 20 minutes!

There's still time for more training Thrifty!

A huge thank you from the team to all the sponsors who have donated so far.

31 May 2012

Nifty, Fifty and Thrifty have asked me to keep this update short and sweet unlike their training walk which was long and spicily hot.  I can report they completed the walk in a blistering 6 hours!  We are unsure how many miles but Fifty stated there were many!!  The team also stated that after going through so many kissing gates that they have decided 'what happened in Abriachan will stay in Abriachan'.  However there is a rumour skinny dipping was partaken!!  The next joint training exercise planned is a cycle from Glen Affric to Beauly.  They are hoping for more favourable weather conditions this time

Stay tuned for further updates.

25 May 2012

I can confirm that Roy has had a very successful weekend's training in his homeland - 45 miles of cycling, albeit very low impact apart from the wind sheild (very important training as it could be a cool east wind on the 23rd!) but the ladies reckon their 18 miles from Inverness to Daviot to Farr and back to Inverness make up for this as their cycle was high impact, high altitude, twisty with lots of braes!! And a north-easterly wind on the way back :-)

Diz has now also endured watching the 1989 and 1991 DVD of the Highland Cross and has even more enthusiasm for taking part.  Linda has the DVD in her possession and is working her way up to watching it, but is anticipating lots of flashbacks to when she competed in 1994 for the first time.

The team are all geared up for their first training session together on the 26th - a walk from Drum to Inverness - Roy hopes he can withstand all the talking in the soaring temperatures that are expected.  More next week ..........

17 May 2012

I can report that much preparation has been carried out.  The ladies have acquired multiple outfits for all weather types on the day.  They have even been spotted training in Daviot Woods during storm force winds to test out whether their hair will be held in place by their heavy duty hairclips.

I can also report Roy has now abandoned his idea of fittng a wind trubine to his bike as it didn't achieve the hoped for output.  However he has stated that the ladies no longer need to question his commitment to the team after enduring one and a half hours of highland Cross DVDs.

A further training session is planned on the 26 May  to test whether  the vocal chords of the ladies will last for 5 hours and whether Roy's ears are tuned in to listen for 5 hours.  I will give a further update once I have the results of this training session.
