This time last year I had a very close call with Viral Meningitis. After over two weeks in hospital, temporarily  losing my speech and a lot of weight, it took me a long six months to recover due to the fact the virus went to my brain but... I was very very lucky and haven't been left with any long-lasting symptoms unlike many people who suffer with Meningitis. (Phew) I started running as part of my recovery at the beginning of the year and my wonderful friend Nikki (I might not be saying that at the finish line!) suggested we both ran the 10k together to raise money to help research into this disease. 

The NHS were absolutely amazing and all the doctors and nurses who looked after me were fantastic but still none of them to this day can tell me how and why I contracted it and how it can be prevented. There has been an awful lot of press coverage recently about babies and children getting meningitis and the thought of our son or one of his little friends going through what I did is beyond terrifying.
