cycling Suffolk's villages

Nina Wilson is raising money for East Anglia's Children's Hospices
“cycling Suffolk's villages”

on 28 August 2007

Donations cannot currently be made to this page
We care for children & young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambs, Essex, Norfolk & Suffolk and support their families. This can be at home, in hospital or at one of three hospices at Milton, The Treehouse and The Nook. We rely on voluntary donations for the majority of our income.

Story

Thank you for visiting my fund-raising page

I am attempting to cycle to all the villages in Suffolk by the end of August 2009 to raise money for East Anglia's Children's Hospices.

                         www.each.org.uk

EACH aim to maximise the quality of life for children with life-threatening conditions and complex health-care needs and to support their families. Care and support is delivered in the family home or at one of the three hospices (Quidenham in Norfolk, Milton in Cambridgeshire and Ipswich in Suffolk).  Some children may only have a short time to live, others may reach young adult-hood but EACH's aim is always the same - to enhance their quality of life and to support their family.

I am taking lots of photos en-route and you can check these out by visiting:-

I have used village signs as 'evidence' of my progress and there is also a map charting my progress.   By February this year I had cycled over 2000 miles and made the decision to raise my fund-raising target to £2000 - I'm almost there!.

I always say, "my bike is my car", as it is my only form of transport. I enjoy the freedom of being able to just set off and go wherever I like.  Every journey I make, as part of my quest to visit every village, is made from my home in Leiston and I cycle all the way.  When cycling further than 35-40 miles from home, I book in at a B&B and try to get to as many villages as possible within that postal district.

My first 'one-off' challenge (during Children's Hospice Week in September 2007) was to cycle to as many places in Suffolk as possible beginning with the letter 'S' I started at Sizewell on Friday 21st September and finished at Saxtead on Thursday 27th September, with two overnight stops. I managed to get to 56 places beginning with 'S' and cycled 360 miles in all during that week. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and cycled through places I didn't even know existed.

I can't wait to revisit some of the more picturesque places (my favourite so far is Kersey) and I will continue to explore those country lanes until I have completed the challenge to visit every village in Suffolk, using purely "pedal -power", to try to raise as much money as I can for

             East Anglia's Children's Hospices!

On 21st June 2008,  I  cycled to EXNING, which I estimated to be the village which is the furthest away from where I live.  The idea was to cycle the longest distance on the longest day. On the Sunday I took  a more leisurely route home, breaking my journey at Elmswell (taking advantage of one of the free B&B offers, following my interview with Rachel Sloane in March)    I cycled to 31 villages that weekend.

The better weather during the summer enabled me to start camping instead of using B&Bs - much cheaper and a lot of fun!  During August my husband and I used our tandem to get to some of the villages in the Forest Heath district.  The roads there are often very busy so I was glad of his support.  We camped out for two nights and cycled just over 180 miles over the three days.  We missed out a couple of villages so I have since returned to the area (solo) to complete these.

My fund-raising efforts were given a huge boost in January 2008 when our local Primary School donated the proceeds from their 2007 Christmas concerts to my cycling challenge for E.A.C.H.  I really can't thank them enough.

I have now cycled to every village in Suffolk (and several small hamlets too!)and 'officially' completed my challenge on Friday 12th December at a place called "World's End" which is roughly in the centre of Suffolk.

Please support this worthy cause and sponsor me online.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: East Anglia's Children's Hospices will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.
