On the 26th April 2013 I was diagnosed with bowel cancer.
My symptoms were minimal, just a small amount of blood was seen after going to the toilet. This happened only about 5 times in total, 3 times in February and two days running in March. That's when I went to see the doctor. He thought it was perhaps just polyps but sent me to see a bowel cancer specialist, just in case. I had a colonoscopy on the 26th April, which showed a tumour and polyps, some of which was removed at the time of the colonoscopy. When my consultant told me about the tumour my words to him were " oh poo!" ;-)
He then told me I needed an operation to remove the tumour and that I would also have a stoma (poo bag). I asked if this would be done with keyhole surgery but he said no, I would be cut open etc. Well I was cut open about 14 inches, straight down my tummy, when I had an ileostomy on the 14th May.
I have an allergy to elastoplast and my poor tummy looked like a war had taken place on it lol
I had another operation at the end of August to reverse the stoma, cut open again and stitched up again and woke up to no more poo bags! yippeeeeeeee!!!!!!!
Each day I am feeling better. Fortunately, because I went to the doctors straight away, I did not have to have any chemotherapy or indeed any further treatment. :-)
I found Beating Bowel Cancer in March 2014 by looking on the web for help with my situation as the back up service provided by my hospitals was pretty much non-existent.
I did not miss one British Superbike race meeting in 2013. I may not have done much whilst there but it took my mind off the pain of the operation and also my friends in the paddock were a great source of encouragement. I did miss the NW200 meeting simply because I was in hospital at the time. Our rider at the time, Alastair Seeley, won the 600cc race and dedicated the win to me :-)
I hope you will give as much as you can to help this brilliant charity, I am overwhelmed with their concern and I thank them from the bottom of my heart for all the information that I have received :-)
Better late than never eh? ;-) xxxx (((hugs)))
