Story

We aim to ride a bicycle at 115mph !!!

In the spring of 2016, to raise funds for the BHF we're attempting to break the current British Motor Paced Cycle Land Speed Record of 112mph set by Guy Martin in his TV Series 'SPEED'. (available on ITV4 iplayer).

The record entails a pace car creating 'still air' in its wake allowing a cyclist to ride behind up to high speed.

Guy Martin did a 'proper job' on the Pendine Sands, and in his tv show used the knowledge and skills of many specialist consultants, fabricators and even a top truck racing team !

In contrast, we aim to break this record for under £1000. 100% of all money donated will go directly to the BHF and not towards attempt costs.

This project has been described as a combination of Scrapheap Challenge, Graham O'Bree and Wallace & Grommit!

We're inspired by the Great British tradition of 'the shed inventor',  so we're using recycled household items where possible. For example, the bicycle is a 20 yeard old converted tandem found in a garage. It has functional additions such as a walking stick, scrap car parts, scrap metal, knicker elastic, exhaust mounting rubbers from a 1989 Ford Escort and an ex-RAF parachute!

The pacing vehicle is a 1998 Diesel VW Passat which has done 244k miles, and although many have said its about ready for scrapheap, we reckon its up to the job... with a tailwind! We've created a fairing using an extendable paint roller pole, damp proof plastic and an awful lot of duct tape.

Guy's record took place on the 6 mile Pendine sands, wheras to save costs we've chosen to attempt the record on the 2 mile Elvington runway.  Getting up to top speed may be difficult in such a short distance with our pace car, but stopping will be more interesting, hence the parachute!

OPERATION PACEMAKER  is made up of cyclists whose achievements range from long distance national record holders to sprint world champions. Dave LeGrys broke this record on the M42 prior to its inaugural opening in 1986 and in 2013 was advisor to Guy Martin's record breaking ride. In 2015 Dave will continue his involvement with this record by driving a pace car.

This attempt came about when, as typically happens, a few mates (Wilco, Soupy & Legro) had a few beers and thought it was a great idea to give it crack ! The hangover's eventually went but the idea remained, OPERATION PACEMAKER was born !

Heart disease remains the UK's biggest killer. The reason we have chosen to raise money for the BHF is because we've been affected by heart disease, either by conditions requiring open-heart surgery, or by the truly devastating sudden loss of a loved one.

This is an attempt on the current record, it is very dangerous and there are no guarantees that we will succeed, but if you would like to get behind us please pledge something in support of the BHF.
