Guildford YMCA aims to serve the local community, in particular young people, by providing a caring environment, building relationships and encouraging the development and personal growth of the individual. Projects include counselling, working with young people who have been excluded from school, social enterprise schemes, and providing housing.

Story

OTM has accepted a challenge to complete the Surrey three peaks challenge for the Guildford YMCA charity.  Staff at the YMCA laid down the gauntlet and OTM has accepted the challenge in a bid to raise money to redevelop its Bridge Street Hostel. OTM will take part in a 26-mile trek, taking in Gibbet Hill in Hindhead, Holmbury Hill near Holmbury St Mary, and Leith Hill near Dorking.

Chris Dudgeon of OTM Consulting said “we are really excited to be picking up the gauntlet for this challenge. It promises to be a great adventure and raises money for a very important cause, the YMCA’s Capital Appeal.

With young people facing record levels of unemployment the YMCA is looking to redevelop its basement level to provide a dedicated learning space in which youth workers can support and equip young people.  As part of the huge fundraising effort, local businessman Richard Fox has conceived a challenge for local businesses, with each company pledging to raise at least £1,000 for the project.

The Surrey Three Peaks Challenge involves staff teams in a 26 mile trek taking in:

· Holmbury Hill - 261m

· Leith Hill - 292m

· Gibbet Hill - 272m

Guildford YMCA connects with hundreds of young people every year, either through providing them with a home in the hostel at Bridge Street or through its youth venue Plantation, currently located off Market Street, Guildford. CEO Pete Brayne says, “For some time we have been conscious that our building needs updating. It isn’t the best fit for the evolving needs of our residents. We don’t have a lounge or recreation areas where residents can relate to and relax with their peers and key workers. We also need private interview rooms for residents to meet with their mentors. And we want to create a space where we can support those looking for employment and training with accessible computer facilities.”

Creating the space is estimated to cost around £600,000 of which the YMCA is committing £100,000 from its reserves. It’s a huge challenge but there’s a huge need, and the Surrey Three Peaks Challenge could raise a significant amount towards it.
