OUR TEAM

A group of seven (Nicolas, Andrew, Matt, Philippe, Kophy, Mini, and Raphael) have made the hare-brained decision that we will attempt to swim the English Channel in a relay this summer to raise money for Aspire.

There have only been 628 successful relays, according to the Channel Swimming Association.  

A Channel swim differs from other swims of a similar distance by its complexity and the local environment.  Our team will be swimming in very cold water of 13C to 17C (hypothermia accounts for a large percentage of the unsuccessful attempts).  The Channel Swimming Association decrees that we must do this without a wetsuit.  Depending upon the conditions, our team could be swimming anywhere from 12 to 24 hours.  A boat pilot will be supporting us the whole way and constantly readjusting our course, taking into account the tide, the conditions, and our speed. 

Our team has decided to swim for the Aspire Charity and we hope that you will help us to achieve our fundraising goal.  All money raised will go to directly to Aspire.

ASPIRE

Every eight hours, someone in the UK is paralysed by spinal cord injury. Disability is expensive; lightweight wheelchairs can cost up to £4,000. Through Aspire Grants, Aspire helps buy lightweight wheelchairs, so people can live more independent lives. Aspire also visits newly injured patients in hospital to offer support and advice, and point people to services such as Aspire Housing, which is a temporary accessible housing solution. We also train people, regardless of their level of injury, to use computers with the aid of Assistive Technology. 

The commitment of our swimmers will mean that Aspire can help many more people with spinal cord injuries to live independent and fulfilled lives.
