Story

I am running the Amsterdam Marathon on 16th October in aid of the Headlight Project and in memory of my sister Naomi.

Naomi was an amazing person, who brightened the lives of everyone she met. She was always passionate and proactive about helping those less fortunate than herself, and she achieved a remarkable amount in her short life. I feel like the luckiest little brother in the world to have shared the first twenty-seven years of my life with her, and she continues to inspire me every single day of my life.

We lost Naomi to suicide in September last year. Ever since then, the Headlight Project has been an amazing source of support for me, my family, and other close friends of Naomi.

The Headlight Project is a local Teesside charity that provides counselling and various trauma and behaviour therapies for adults and children. As well as working to help people who have suffered traumatic loss, they work in suicide prevention, and have recently trained some of their counsellors on the ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) programme.

I cannot overstate how much the Headlight Project has helped me personally, and through their group sessions I have seen first-hand the support and massive change it has been making to other families as well. I want to raise money for them to say thank you and to give back to them, so that they can continue to support many more people in the future.

About the charity

Founded in memory of Russ Devereux, the Headlight Project aims to reduce the number of deaths by suicide in the Tees Valley through therapy of those bereaved by suicide, and preventative education and training.
