WDCS Pod Plod 2010 · 27 August 2010 to 30 August 2010 ·
I am going to go with the rest of my family on a 26 mile walk in August to raise money for WDCS( Whales and Dolphins Conservation Society) it would be great if you could sponsor me, even if it is only a little bit, to show your support.
These are reasons why we are trying to raise money for WDCS's work in the Moray Firth in Scotland: This year the dolphins need lots of help because a) The Highland Council have allowed Whiteness Marina to build a new marina that would serve 500 boats- over twice the 220 limit that an independent study said would be a safe maximum. b) There are oil and gas platforms just outside the SAC (Special Area of Conservation) and an oil terminal and pipelines, as well as considerable boat traffic, meaning that there is a chance of an oil spill. Blocks of seabed within the SAC have been included in recent licensing rounds. The seismic surveys that are used to find oil and gas deposits use air guns which send concentrated sound through the water in all directions. concentrated sound can stop dolphins from communicating, finding food and in extreme cases can kill. Also at the end of a platforms life it may be removed from the seabed using explosives. c) Exercise Joint Warrior will take place in April and October this year and the MOD may use Sonar among other things in the Moray Firth.
