Story

The Projects Abroad Human Rights Office (PAHO) in Ghana is looking to raise money for a welfare facility for children in Osu, Accra. The facility consists of three units: the Osu Boys Remand Centre, the Girls Correctional Centre and the Osu Children's Shelter.

Volunteers from the office visit these three centres weekly to try to provide the children with a rudimentary education.

Children's Shelter: The children at the shelter often have been taken off the street or have run away from home for a number of reasons. It is intended as temporary accomodation before finding the child a home or sending them to a State orphanage and so the children are reliant on the volunteers to learn English.

Boys Remand Centre: This centre is for boys awaiting trial who have been refused bail. Few of them are actually convicted and once they leave the centre may find themselves disowned by their family. Whilst held in custody their education is disrupted and often they find themselves with poorer prospects than when they arrive, regardless of the outcome of their trial.

Girls Correctional Centre: this is for girls who have been convicted of a crime. Whilst they are taught basic vocational skills in custody, there is little provision for education and often the girls cannot even write their own name. Although the volunteers from PAHO do what they can to educate these children, they are limited by the few resources available.

Specifically we are looking to raise money for the following:

- mosquito nets for rooms in Children's Shelter. This will cost around 50 cedis (£18)

- Repair to ceiling tiles in rooms in Children's shelter. This will cost around 95 cedis (£30)

- trap doors to prevent mosquitos entering the dormitory rooms in Children's shelter. This costs around 100 cedis (£33)

- nappies and basic toiletries to care for the disabled children who have been abandoned by their families. The nappies are disposible and so we will try to buy as many as we can afford.

- story books, textbooks in English for all the facilities. The price of a book here is, on average, 4.50 (little more than £1).

- wall charts and posters to aid learning for all facilities with the alphabet, nouns, verbs and other basic topics to teach English. Wall charts are approx. 15 cedis (around £5)

- stationary including class notebooks, pencils, pens and crayons. 10 class notebooks costs 9 cedis (around £3).

As you can see these things convert to very cheap prices in British Pounds. They are simple resources and materials which we would take for granted in the UK, but these children desperately need.
