--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the early hours of 4th July 2010, PC David Rathband was shot from just 3ft away through the closed passenger window of his patrol car, sending hundreds of pieces of shrapnel into his face. A second shot hit him in the chest.

PC Rathband was rushed to hospital suffering from injuries that were so bad that no-one - including David himself - gave him much chance of survival. Amazingly, the surgeons were able to save his life, but they could not save his sight.

He is completely blind in both eyes with no hope of any sight ever being restored.

PC Rathband said “I now want what happened to me to be looked upon as a positive thing. Lets show the nicer side of human nature by supporting other personnel of the emergency services that have been criminally injured in the line of duty. I truly believe that together we can now make a difference and assist others in their time of need”.

 -----------------------------------------------

In December 2008, PC Gareth Rees was hit by a car travelling at about 50-55mph whilst dealing with a Road Traffic incident.

Despite undergoing six operations with more to come, and effectively walking on two broken legs with crutches, he has begun fundraising for PC David Rathband’s Blue Lamp Foundation and has completed the 1st annual 3 mile friendship walk in David’s home town.

He said: “I’m lucky to be here – I should have died on the roadside. We had that conversation that we both should have. We got very tearful talking last night.

“And Claire’s been talking with Kath as they’ve been through similar things – the knock on the door in the night.

“We’ve got to look at the positives – my wife’s pregnant and I’ve got time at home with the baby.”

PC Rathband and Rees will be accompanied on the tarmac by Robin Palmer and Steve White, who will guide them along the course whilst completing it themselves in an attempt to boost funds for the charity.
