DUNCAN DRASDO is raising money for Parkinson’s UK
In memory of Neville Drasdo

Anyone can get Parkinson’s. It gets worse over time and there’s no cure. Yet. Funding research into the most promising treatments, we’re getting closer to a cure. Until then, we're improving life for people with Parkinson’s, and the people in their lives. Together we'll find a cure.

Story

Neville wanted to leave a legacy donation to Parkinson's research so the family will be making a substantial contribution from his estate but we wanted to give friends and former colleagues the chance to make their own donation in his memory and where possible boost it with Gift Aid.

If you wish to, please also add your own message or memory in the box titled "Your Message"

A LITTLE BACKGROUND ABOUT NEVILLE
As many have commented since his death at 87 on 20th August, Neville was a remarkable man - of course most importantly a truly lovely person -  held in great affection by his family, friends and colleagues. Born in humble surroundings in Bradford in 1932 - he passed the entrance exam for Thornton Grammar School. Despite leaving school at 16, he later entered academia, ultimately rising to the top of his field in Vision and Neuroscience retiring as a respected Emeritus Professor (DSc) with a wealth of research publications to his name and launching the careers of many students who went on to excel due to his generous mentorship and infectious enthusiasm.

His grandfather nurtured his curiosity and engendered in him a specific interest in lenses which led him to take an optician’s apprenticeship and begin studies at night school qualifying, 5 years later, as an Ophthalmic Optician. However the catalyst that allowed a working class lad to believe he could step into the world of academia was rock climbing. It opened his eyes to opportunity as the sport brought him into contact with other young climbers from all walks of life who recognised his intellect and enthusiasm and encouraged him to expand the limits of his aspirations. The appeal of long academic holidays to spend rock climbing was no doubt a huge incentive for him too.

Neville and his brother Harold formed a formidable climbing partnership - celebrating 50 years of new routing in 2000 with their final new route together “Two Against Nature”. The Drasdo Brothers were a core part of the Bradford Lads group who both rivalled and collaborated with the famous Rock and Ice Club of Manchester founded by the legendary Don Whillans and Joe Brown. http://footlesscrow.blogspot.com/2018/06/the-drasdo-brothersnorthern-expressions.html

He was rock climbing into his late 70s (including precarious ascents of Alpine peaks which could easily have killed the small band of “septuagenarian lunatics” led by his great friend Mike Dixon) and still ascending mountains into his 80s. He came to love the Malvern Hills where he retired. In the last few years, before Parkinson's started to really take its toll, he would attend the annual Bradford Lads reunion dinners at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in his beloved 'Lakes'.
