Great North Run 2021 · 12 September 2021 ·

Tommy's funds medical research into the causes of premature birth, stillbirth and miscarriage. We’re dedicated to finding causes and treatments to save babies’ lives as well as providing trusted pregnancy and baby loss information and support.

Story

I was planning on running this years' Great North Run for Tommy's. However due to Covid, I have had to defer my place to next year. I still want to raise money for Tommy's, so I have set myself another challenge: to walk 1 MILLION STEPS in September, over 30 days. That's 33,334 steps / 17 miles on average per day.

“Tommy's fund research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, and provide pregnancy health information to parents. We believe it is unacceptable that one in four women lose a baby during pregnancy or birth. We want every parent to have the best possible pregnancy outcomes and to take home happy, healthy babies.

We are the largest charity funding research into the causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. We also provide information for parents-to-be to help them have a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Miscarriage and stillbirth should not be seen as 'bad luck'

Parents who suffer from miscarriage, stillbirth or premature birth may have heard one or more of the following common phrases:

  • ‘It’s one of those things’
  • ‘It’s nature’s way’
  • ‘You’ve just been unlucky’

Would this be an acceptable thing to say to someone who has cancer or Alzheimer’s? We think not – so why do we say these things in pregnancy?

We are supported by people who refuse to accept that a baby's death is just 'one of those things'. The people who support us want to do something about the lack of research and information around pregnancy issues. Like us, they believe every parent has the right to a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Our target is to halve the number of babies that die during pregnancy or birth by 2030.”
