Pants for Pounds is a charity appeal, urging famous faces to donate a signed pair of pants to be raffled off to their fans! All cash raised will go to the Dorset Cancer Centre at Poole Hospital. The centre provides a wide range of treatments including radiotherapy and chemotherapy for both common and rare cancers. Their outstanding hard work and dedication provides not just treatment, but fantastic support to all those suffering through this difficult process.

Back in October 2013, my mother was unfortunately diagnosed with the earliest stages of breast cancer. There had been no symptoms, no lumps or health problems to suggest that something was wrong. All that happened was she was sent a letter, asking her to go for a routine check up due to her turning fifty next year and thank god she went - results showed that they may be something wrong.

These further tests were required to take place at the Dorset Cancer Centre and I cannot fault the amount of support that she was shown. It was explained to her that abnormalities were showing and further tests would be required. The hospital were very understanding and efficient, being sure to put her through to a biopsy immediately on the same day. This biopsy confirmed there were precancerous cells and she was diagnosed with the earliest form of Breast cancer. It was terrifying for all of us, mostly her as you can imagine.

From that point on, the hospital made sure to explain everything that would be necessary and they were even prepared for unforeseen complications that later turned up. Mum was back in within a couple of weeks for the operation required. At first it was believed it would just be the one operation needed and no more treatment, but during the operation it was discovered that it was larger area that needed to be removed. This was handled with complete care and professionalism. It also meant that further treatment of radiotherapy would be required.

Throughout the whole treatment process, my Mum was treated with empathy and encouragement, making sure to keep her positive and helping her see how lucky it was that this had been caught when it had. She was and still is incredibly thankful for the help that was offered to her. It helped what could have been an incredibly difficult time that much easier to cope with. Because of our experience, we are well aware of how important donations and fundings are to hospitals to ensure that the above treatment, equipment and research can be given. Without these, cases like my Mum’s might be harder to diagnose.

After everything the hospital offer their patients, we would like to offer something back.
