The Challenge

A 75-mile circular walk of the Western Lake District taking in several peaks. Walking commences on Saturday 7th May 2011 and ends on Friday 13th May.

The Participants

Bruce Roberts, Clive Heale, Paul Harrison and Richard Noyes. We are four friends who like to set ourselves a long distance walking challenge each year. This year we would like to use our walk to raise money for the Fiona Stevenson Memorial Fund.

The Cause

The Fiona Stevenson Memorial Fund helps under privileged children in Belize learn how to swim in order to help decrease the high level of child drownings that occur every year. Paul's connecion with the Fund was that he was, until recently, a work colleague of Fiona's sister, Andrea,

About Fiona

Fiona Stevenson was killed in the London bombings of July 2005. She was a lawyer and shortly before her death, spent a gap period in Belize helping to update and overhaul their legal systems. She loved her time there, and felt warmly received by the people she met.

In her honour, the family set up the Fiona Stevenson Memorial Fund in order to help under privileged children in Belize learn how to swim to help decrease the high level of child drownings that occur every year.

Working in partnership with the YWCA in Belize City, hundreds of children have already benefited from accredited swimming lessons funded by the charity. However, Belize has a high birth rate and we need to continue supporting these life-saving lessons which provide young vulnerable children with opportunities they would not otherwise have access to. Attending regular swimming lessons not only safe-guards the safety of children, but it also presents educational opportunities, health improvements and the learning of valuable skills which can be utilised by a burgeoning tourism industry. It is hoped that one-day, swimming lessons will be compulsory for all children, but in the meantime, the charity is the only opportunity many will have to learn these most basic of life-saving skills.
