Edinburgh Half Marathon · 27 May 2017 to 28 May 2017 ·
Time to do some fundraising and also to set myself a goal of getting fit.
I will be running two half marathons this year for the Margaret Kerr Unit in the Borders General Hospital, one in Edinburgh and the other is to be decided.
I have chosen to run for the Margaret Kerr Unit and Palliative Care Service after the sudden lose of my Auntie Mairi last July.
Mairi had a very short battle with cancer after a 4 week battle she was referred to the Unit for what would be her last week in life.
Auntie Mairi was an incredibly brave woman during her short battle, it was a great shock to all of the family, growing up in Kelso wasn't easy in some senses for myself and this woman was always there for me, she always had a smile on her face at every party or gathering we had. she was an Aunt to myself and my sister and always looked out for us, a sister to John, Janice and Julie and daughter to my Madge and George. She loved all of us greatly and is a massive miss to everyone. I am running the half Marathons for her and will make sure I do her proud.
I come from a family who is very active in supporting the Margaret Kerr Unit, my great Aunt opened a charity shop in Kelso and has so far raised over £200,000 for the Unit. Mairi was in the Margaret Kerr Unit for just under a week and in that week i was able to see what support the unit offered, the nurses are amazing and really supportive but they would not be able to do this without the amazing support that is done through fundraising so this is why I am running for them.
The Margaret Kerr Unit (MKU) is a purpose-built specialist palliative care unit serving the population of the Scottish Borders. We have eight comfortable rooms with spaces and gardens for patients, families and friends to relax and receive support. Whilst they operate open visiting we ask that you check with staff first to make sure that it is convenient.
The team look after patients whose symptoms are complex, working with them in their home, community hospitals or care homes as well as the Borders General Hospital and the MKU.
Any donation is welcome for this incredible charity.
Thank You
