We’re Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and we’re a suicide prevention charity. We host a helpline for people affected by suicide, as well as vital online resources for anyone who needs them.

Story

The ’Campaign Against Living Miserably’ are my type of people. As a spritely man of 25, I am slap bang in the middle of a 20 year demographic where suicide is the biggest killer. Indeed, as a man aged 15 to 35, your propensity is three times that of your female classmate or colleague, with the North of England showing the highest number by area. Worryingly, of these statistics, less than 20% are in touch with an agency or stream of help.

For all that can be said of the dawn of metrosexuality, it is odd that young men are still closed books. Whilst generalist attitudes may have shifted towards the ‘open and honest’ approach of emotions, it is still the norm to keep things bottled up. Added to this, depression is a fairly sickening anomaly with causes not exclusive to biological, psychological and social. Through this assault course it is no wonder that some don’t make it through the other side.

C.A.L.M is a charity ran by and for young men to address some of the issues facing the modern cad or lad. In an unobtrusive and non-dramatic fashion, they set to question the taboo of suicide, its causes and how to prevent it. Through no government funding they provide professional help and advice, propped up by an array of cool kids such as those from Circus, Chibuku, Cream and Topman.

So, like C.A.L.M seeks to help young men with their inner demons, I too am intent on facing mine - running. Whilst I can make the token effort on a cross trainer once in a while, I am probably the worst road-runner known to man. This 10km run, although small, will be a challenge and perhaps my 'tour de force' (I doubt this massively). So please come join me in supporting a great charity and dig deep!

Peace out.
