Ride Across Britain 2022 · 10 September 2022 to 18 September 2022 ·

We are the national charity for anyone affected by mesothelioma. A preventable cancer caused by exposure to asbestos. Your generous donations allow us to support people with mesothelioma to live better, longer and to prevent mesothelioma happening to future generations.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I always thought that taking on a challenge such as this was a young man's game, but having recently turned 50, I'm hoping to dispel that myth by cycling from Land's End to John O'Groats in 9 days. Until last year, I'd not ridden a bike since I was 16 so just staying upright will be challenge in itself!

Why am I doing this? I lost my Dad in March 2020 to mesothelioma, which is asbestos cancer. Many of us will know of someone who has been exposed to asbestos, though the effects of that exposure will often take years to manifest. Exposure is usually (though not exclusively) occupationally acquired with those working in certain industries being more at risk than others.

There is no known cure for mesothelioma and once diagnosed, life expectancy can be relatively short. However, there is a lot of fantastic work going on with clinical trials and pioneering surgeries and it is hoped that one day, a cure may be found for this cruel, debilitating disease.

Mesothelioma UK are a national specialist resource centre, with a team of dedicated specialist mesothelioma nurses, who integrate into NHS front line services to ensure specialist mesothelioma nursing is available at the point of need. They were fantastic when my Dad was ill and I'm hoping that my ride will help raise awareness for the wonderful work that they do and help fund future care.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Thank you.
