Before I stand down as Chairman of Trustees of Blind Veterans UK , I have given myself a silly little challenge. Last summer I set myself the goal of walking the equivalent of 70 marathons in my 70th year. To add spice, I have now set myself the challenge of walking 70km within a single 24-hour period, a couple of weeks before my 70th birthday. This amounts to 24 x 3-km tabs, one each hour, from noon on 19th June to noon on 20th June.
Blind Veterans UK is an inspirational charity which provides emotional, practical and financial support for Veterans who suffer sight loss. It restores purpose to the lives of those who have served their country, not just through rehabilitation and training but also by confronting the challenges of social isolation. This last year has been really difficult – both in raising funds and being able to continue providing support. I am immensely proud of the way our staff and volunteers have rallied to the extra challenge of Covid-19 and risen above it. But now we need to recharge the coffers and I need to do my bit as well.
There are two ways in which you can help. Sponsorship for the 70km challenge, my vanity project, would be really welcome. Alternatively, you might consider making a modest monthly donation to the charity. This regular giving, which remains in your control, gives more certainty to the charity about its financial viability. You could, of course, do both.
