We increase the pool of stem cell donors to give patients a second chance of life

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving #fightforgeorge page.

In February of this year, a school friend of mines son was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML) which affects just 7 in 1 million children.

There are many people and charities helping George and his fellow fighters along the way.

To help raise money and awareness, and to allow George and many others (children and adults alike), to fight the next day and the next as we all search for a cure to cancer, I have taken on the challenge to climb Kilimanjaro.

Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain standing at 5,895m (19,340ft). My ascent will start on the 14th August culminating with summit day (hopefully) on the 19th August, and the final descent on the 20th.

As part of the #fightforgeorge pledge, I have chosen to raise money for "Delete Blood Cancer' (DKMS).

DKMS key mission is to provide a suitable donor for every person in need of a blood stem cell donation. Every 20 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. A blood stem cell donation from a matching donor could save their lives.

Sadly, many of these are children, but there is hope as blood stem cells from a matching donor could save their lives.

There are around 2,000 people in the UK searching for a blood stem cell donation each year and over 37,000 people waiting worldwide.

For someone in need of a blood stem cell donation, finding a person with a matching tissue type is not easy. With more than 8,500 known tissue characteristics, that can occur in millions of combinations, finding a matching donor is a bit like winning the lottery!

Additional Information:
'Pledge for George' has been set up to make sure the many people and charities helping George and those alike are celebrated, that awareness of childhood cancer is spread and that George can look back, when this fight is won, and know that this time was a positive moment in his life. Please take time to visit:
