It was late September 2010. I was 24 years old. One moment she was absolutely fine, going to work, walking the dog, doing a simply beautiful job of being 'Mum'.
The stats the doctors gave us weren't great. Generally speaking, by the time symptoms have appeared it's usually already very advanced and has likely spread to the pancreas, liver and beyond.
With this type and stage of cancer, less than 1 in 10 survive for more than 5 years. We were told to expect 6-24 months at best.
Six horrific, nightmarish weeks later (the memories of which still haunt me on a daily basis) on the 17th of November, we lost her to gallbladder cancer.
This evil disease completely turned our world upside down. Powerless and heartbroken, there was nothing which could be done in our situation.
But it doesn't have to be this way, more people than ever are fighting cancer and winning... changes in lifestyle, better awareness of risk factors and largely thanks to the incredible ground-breaking work done by charities such as Cancer Research UK, symptoms are being spotted sooner, treatments deployed earlier and more people are surviving cancer.
So what's this all about?
In summer my friend Dominic stepped in the ring at Ultimate White Collar Boxing in York to raise money for CRUK. He's since inspired me to have a bash at UWCB, this time in Harrogate. I'm hoping it'll be a great way to raise money for charity, learn something new, lose some weight and maybe even get my looks rearranged for the better.
Obviously I'm shitting myself but the idea of raising money to fight this heartless disease at the cost of potentially getting hurt, is worth every single penny.
Donating will take a minute or two, can be done anonymously and can be as much or as little as you can afford. I totally understand if donating isn't possible but would be equally as grateful if you could share this link.
Collectively, we can put cancer on notice.
-----------
I'll be fighting on Sunday 16th December at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate. I'll also be keeping a video diary of my training, sweat and tears in the run up to the event - I'll update this page with a link to the videos when I've figured out which platform I'll be sharing on.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read this. Paul w.
