Rural communities in Merrueshi suffer from high levels of predation and retaliate by killing lions. An innovative project that protects the manyattas with blinking lights to deter lions and provides each household with a light inside their houses.

Story

The Lion is now listed as Critically Endangered. When I was a young boy there were probably 250,000 Lions in the wild. There are now thought to be less than 20,000. There are fewer lions in Africa than Rhinos. If we don't do something, then this iconic big cat, a symbol of strength, will be lost forever.

LionAid is taking the challenge to climb mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania July 2022! I will be filming the team throughout this challenging task to the top of the highest 'stand alone' mountain in the world, the highest point in Africa. This is no mean feat and will take a lot of willpower and passion from our 15 strong team to make it to the top of Kilimanjaro. Our volunteers and Christine Macsween (LionAid's co director) are aiming to raise £65,000 to start our very important human/lion conflict mitigation project in Merrueshi, Kenya.

The project consists of upgrading bomas (where the livestock are kept overnight to protect them from predators) and the Insurance herd compensation scheme: Substituting a community-derived compensation scheme to effectively counter the continuing frustration with existing compensation programmes. Effective equipping of livestock bomas to deter and prevent livestock losses caused by predators. Part of the funds raised will go to improve a community primary school where the 400 girls and boys are facing a hard life academically. We aim to provide better toilet facilities, two additional classrooms and maybe even a school lunch programme if sufficient funds are raised to encourage children back into school.

Please support the LionAid volunteers on this journey to conserve Lions in the wild...!

LionAid is a small but highly effective charity, based in the UK, focused mainly but not exclusively on the conservation of lions, which are facing catastrophic declines in the wild. We believe that there are now only five viable lion populations left in Africa and one small population in India.
