I will be stepping up to the Start Line for Dublin Marathon. After many years of being elatively inactive other than walking & sailing, just over 2 years ago I started a Coach to 5K Program, took up cycling and also done a bit of coastal rowing, all of which had been combined on occasions to form alternative triathlons of up to 111km. Not for the faint hearted, especially when considering I am registered as Severe Sight Impaired. But Marathon running seems to be in another league totally, which is probably why only 1% of Earth's population ever complete one.
I'm a regular Parkrunner (5k), do the odd 10k and up until recently had done 2 half marathons, which were tough enough.
So why a Marathon? Because curiosity got the better of me and I didn't want to get to a decade later on life and wonder if I could ever do one. Training didn't start well as my original Guide Runner fell injured before we even started. Along came a guy called Ian, who offered to Guide & Train me. Training started later than most and has been somewhat different. Between January this year to July I had run a total of 142 miles, in August and September I covered over 150 miles each month, running 5-6 times a week. In two months I have seen personal best times tumble over a number of distances, including half marathon and to date run 23miles non-stop. It's been tough, it's hurt, I have laughed, smiled and broke down. But it is soon time to put myself to the test.
Why Glenveagh School? I have had the privilege of working along staff in this amazing school since 2003, supporting many children & young people with transitions into adult life and in more recent years supporting those with a sight loss. Th school is vibrant, full of happy faces and always very welcoming. Like many special school much of the specialised equipment the young people need and use is very expensive and resources can be limited. There is always another piece of equipment that the children could significantly benefit from, to help them grow and develop, have more fun and make happy school memories.
Every £ will make a difference.
Thank you for reading and sponsoring.
