At Alzheimer’s Society we’re working towards a world where dementia no longer devastates lives. We do this by giving help to those living with dementia today, and providing hope for the future by campaigning to make dementia the priority it should be and funding groundbreaking research.

Story

Both sides of my family have been affected by dementia.
There is no cure for dementia.

On January 1st 2019 my grandma Moyra, passed away after suffering from dementia for around four years. Dementia is caused by diseases of the brain, which starts slowly and progresses gradually.

This particular disease is not only dreadful for the individual, but also for the surrounding family and friends, as often they are not recognised anymore.

Grandma was a light to so many people. She was selfless, going out of her way to do so much for other people, a lot of the time doing things for folk who others thought were beyond help. It seems so unfair that someone who gave everything would get struck down with such a cruel illness.

She was very strong willed which is the inspiration to raise money to raise awareness and try and find a cure for this disease. In her memory I am going to try and embrace her determination and run across the country.

“The Coast to Coast route is a 192-mile unofficial and mostly un-signposted long-distance footpath in Northern England. Devised by Alfred Wainwright, it passes through three contrasting national parks: The Lake District National Park, The Yorkshire Dales National Park, and The North York Moors National Park. There is 8,606 m (28,235 ft) of climbing over the course of the route.”

I am hoping to complete the route from St. Bees to Robin Hoods Bay in under 60 hours’ total time. I will be attempting the crossing unsupported, with no crew, no food drops, no pacers or any outside support. I will be relying on my own navigation and acquiring food and water wherever I can en-route and catching minimal amounts of sleep on the side of the track.

I have never asked to be sponsored for anything before, so hopefully by attempting to run across the country, through three days and two nights, I can help to make a difference to the future of dementia.

Closer to the time, I will add a link to a live tracker that I will carry which can be viewed in real time on the internet. Also a concrete date in July will be set closer to the time.

Thanks for your support.

Pete

Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.
