Miles for Myeloma

Our goal is to raise £100k to help us continue our vital work. To do that, we need you to lace up the trainers, dig out the walking boots and dust off the old bike to raise sponsorship for your very own Miles for Myeloma!

Story

Our names are Kathryn and Aidan McGee and we are taking on the Yorkshire 3 Peak Challenge along with a group of our friends on Saturday 17th August to mark the 3rd Anniversary since our dad passed away. We wanted to do something special to mark his 3rd Anniversary, something that brings people together to remember him but at the same time educate people about Myeloma. Our dad was an all round sportsman and loved anything that involved the outdoors so this challenge seemed fitting.

Our dad Peter McGee was diagnosed with Multiple myeloma 18 years ago while training to do the London Marathon. Himself and his training partner had been out for a long run on a cold winters day, when he returned home he explained he didn't feel very well, little did my dad and mam know that he would later be diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. Myeloma is a cancer of the plasma cells; plasma cells are found in the bone marrow and are responsible for helping the body fight against infection. His doctor Professor Graham Jackson for newcastle hospitals would treat him over the coming years seeing him through his first stem cell transplant. Although he was told he would have a maximum of 5 years with the treatment he defied all odds and was in remission for 16 years. Over the years he did experience complications in some forms but always battled through. He was such an inspiration to people that he would often be asked to speak to newly diagnosed patients because he showed that positivity meant so much to getting through this disease. However in August 2015 our families fears returned after finding out his Myeloma had became active again. Although this was a difficult thing to deal with dad again took his positive attitude into his second stem cell transplant and successfully came through another one in February 2016. All seemed well and he was beginning to prepare to go back to work in May 2016 when he was told after a scan that they had found 3 Malignant Melanoma tumours growing in his lung. They believe that they had come from a pre cancerous mole that he had removed from his face 17 years ago after his treatment for myeloma had made more susceptible to skin cancer. Although he again took a positive attitude into more treatment his body was not able to take it after only going through his stem cell transplant less than 6 months before. Dad passed away on 20th August 2016  at the age of 52. Our aim now is to raise awareness about Myeloma, as in a recent survey 97% of people asked did not know what it was, even though it is currently the second most common type of blood cancer. At present treatments can be effective at halting Myeloma for longer and improving quality of life, but at present there is no cure. We hope that the amazing work in finding new treatments can be continued and we continue researching and finding out more about myeloma and maybe one day find a cure. The Newcastle Freeman and Professor Jacksons team were amazing throughout his 16 year battle and can only continue to do there amazing work with funding and research to obtain new treatments. We want to use his Anniversary in a positive way, to try and help other families who are suffering or living with someone who has Myeloma.
