Story
I initially signed up for this challenge to test ‘my own’ mental strength and resilience, as so many people in public health have had to work ridiculous hours under difficult conditions. But feel it’s a great opportunity to raise some money for needed voluntary groups in our area. The one that inspired me to do this was the SRMR due to an incident that happen a few weeks ago in the Lake District.
These guys have been amazing for many years but since last lockdown and this pandemic started (March 2020) they’ve had to face uncertainty. Supporting people visiting North Yorkshire Moors and those taking up mountain biking. As volunteers they could get called out whenever needed and with a ‘stay at home’ message for months it was the accident in Patterdale that showed the true nature of their actions. Selfless and non judgemental they came out to a person in distressful during the night. Sadly a member of their team is in hospital due to an accident that could have been avoided.
This could happen here in Scarborough and Ryedale and with restrictions due to be lifted more people will no doubt venture out and not think about the full risks involved.
SRMR need our support, if it’s funding kit or training, clothing, vehicle maintenance that we can contribute towards. Some are self employed or full time jobs and sacrifice their time to support those needing help.
The 4 x 4 x 48 (created by Navy Seal David Goggins) (totally 48 miles int two days) challenge is a representation of the physical and mental endurance needed to function under hard conditions, lack of sleep, risk of injury, even lack of food .. the SRMR can be out for many hours after team members doing a full day at work. With gyms closed and no events it’s my ‘f**k it’ moment and being inspired by a few others I have time of my hand and not much to do .. so why not!
