Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit Friends of the Earth's JustGiving page to celebrate the life and work of Phil Michaels through the Phil Michaels Legal Interns Scholarship Fund.

In 2016 Friends of the Earth launched the Fund in memory of Phil who headed our successful Legal Team from 2001 to 2010. Phil was a truly inspirational and leading lawyer who was passionate about environmental justice - the right to a clean and safe environment for everyone. He was at the forefront of protecting our environment through the law in the UK and was responsible for a number of legal success which impact on our lives to this day.

The Fund is one of the first of its kind in an environmental campaigning charity in the UK. Thanks to the incredible support of Phil's friends, family and associates, the Scholarship gives aspiring young lawyers vital entry level experience in our Legal Team. Each intern works with us for 12 months at a cost of £25,000 per role. They provide us with essential assistance and in turn get the experience they need to become the lawyers that the environment so needs and Phil so wanted.

Friends of the Earth's interns have helped us protect the stunning Druridge Bay in Northumberland from a new open cast coalmine, helped fight the Government to keep legal costs for environmental cases low and predictable and strengthened our Net Zero targets. These are incredible wins for our world that would not have been possible without their help.

We need your donations now to give even more passionate and talented young people a living wage to help them become lawyers, no matter their financial position or background.

Please donate as generously as you can today to help us continue to achieve Phil's passion for justice for people and the environment. Thank you.
