Story
Since 2015 I have been working with the ACAM (Association of Midwives in Mam speaking area) in the highlands of Guatemala. Midwifery is a "calling" for these indigenous Mayan midwives who live and work in rural areas addressing the many obstacles to effective and sustainable health care in their communities. As an International Ambassador for Maya Midwifery International, the model is based on listening to local concerns and addressing issues beyond training sessions and provision of services. It is one of material, economic and cultural support, educational development and community empowerment.
As COVID rages around the world, Guatemala has seen cases in the last month increase to the highest levels. With less than 2% of the country having been vaccinated stress levels are very high. The ACAM association has 71 midwives serving rural deprived communities.
It is a basic ask, we need soap! Antibacterial for hand washing for the midwives and all the mothers pregnant and with new-born babies (and their families), and laundry soap for them to wash their clothes in public laundry baths.
I am trying to raise funds for 4,000 bars of antibacterial soap @ £0.35 = £1,400 and 1,000 bars of laundry soap @ £0.50 = £500. Total £1,900. All donations sincerely appreciated.
