The Bone Cancer Research Trust is the leading charity dedicated to fighting primary bone cancer. Our mission is to save lives and improve outcomes for people affected by primary bone cancer through research, information, awareness and support.

Story

Over the next year I will be doing three treks in three continents; Lónsöræfi in Iceland, The Great Wall of China, and Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

In March 2011 my daugther, Sigrún Lára, was just four months old when she was diagnosed with Mestastatic Ewing's Sarcoma; a very aggressive bone cancer which had spread from her chest to her legs and skull.

I had taken her to the GP because she was seeming a bit grizzly. Within a few days she was at Great Ormond Street receiving emergency chemotherapy to reduce the tumour in her chest, which had become so large that she needed help breathing, and steroid treatment to prevent her from becoming paralysed.

My family was catapulted from the bliss of having a new and wonderful little girl join us, to her potentially being snatched away. We were now in a new world of very sick children, where life and death become best friends, and for a year our daughter underwent seven rounds of chemotherapy treatment, surgery and high dose chemotherapy to induce a remission. The side effects are indescribable in just a few words, but our daughter was amazing and in the moments that she felt well her zest for life was a joy to see and kept the morale of the family up.

As a mother watching my baby daughter being tortured for a year to try to make her well again and to have a chance of a future is devastating, especailly in the knowledge that her treatment has a cure rate of just 27%. Luckily her cancer is so rare that only two babies a year in the UK get it. However this means that research for her kind of cancer doesn't get the same attention as the more common ones.

The Bone Cancer Research Trust is the only charity in the UK dedicated to completing invaluable research on aggressive bone cancers. I would like to see my daughter's disease have a higher cure rate and there are promising new treatments out there that need researching in the context of her cancer. As ever this research needs funding.  In doing these treks I want to raise enough to help substantially to push forward better cure rates for my daughter's cancer.

The first trek starts next week in Iceland so please start donating for this trek now! I've got a lot of money to raise so please do let your friends, family, work colleagues, companies know.
