Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my BWC 2011 JustGiving page.
On Sunday 21st August, just 2 weeks before my 40th birthday, I will be donning a suit and pink bow tie to race 13km around Blenheim Palace Estate in Oxfordshire on a folding bicycle to compete in the Brompton World Championships 2011.
For those not familiar with the Brompton folding bicycle, it is a design icon; the must-have vehicle of choice for city commuters. It handles like a suitcase but unfolds (in well-practiced hands) within 10-20 seconds to give you a nippy little bike on tiny wheels that can cover distances at speed - http://www.brompton.co.uk/page.asp?p=3072.
Don't be fooled by its ridiculous appearance - the Brompton is to cycling what the Mini is to car-driving…..think Italian Job!
I inherited my lovely bright yellow Brompton from my dear friend and best man, Michael Woods, who died last year from Motor Neurone Disease. I love my yellow Brompton!
I will not be competing alone. My husband Simon and I have been put up for this bonkers challenge by our nephew, Daniel, the serious cyclist. Together the three of us make up "Team T-P". We will be joining 750 other competitors from 31 countries, including winners of National Brompton Championships in Japan, Taiwan and the US. Now in its sixth year, the Brompton World Championship 2011 looks set to build further on its fast becoming legendary status. Daniel is a real contender for the BWC crown. I probably stand a better chance of winning the Fastest Folder category, and who knows ….. maybe Simon is in for a chance of winning the Veterans. However we do, we will surely have a lot of fun doing it.
The BWC 2011 is part of the Breast Cancer Care Bike Blenheim festival of cycling. I will be racing in memory of my lovely mum Janice, who succumbed to breast cancer in July 2005. Daniel also lost his mother, Alice, to breast cancer when he was a teenager. I am hoping to raise £250 to fund the valuable work BCC does in providing a free advice, information and support service to people and their families suffering with breast cancer.
Please support me, Simon and Daniel in our bid to become Brompton World Champion 2011. Please give generously if you can!
