a summer to remember · 12 July 2012

Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK. We build girls’ confidence and raise their aspirations. We give them the chance to discover their full potential and encourage them to be a powerful force for good. We give them a space to have fun.

Story

I am passionate about the opportunities offered to girls and young women across the world as members of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). Please read the story about the Polish Guides' struggle to become members of WAGGGS. Are you able to contribute 80 Zloty? It would make such a difference.

Girlguiding UK will pass all funds from this Justgiving page to the Guide Friendship Fund specifically for Poland.

'a summer to remember' is my personal challenge, to find somewhere to sleep in a tent in each of our 19 Counties in Girlguiding London and South East England over 19 nights during the Games Time and to embrace the 7 Olympic and Paralympic values: respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality.

Will you join me in my determination to reach out a hand of international friendship to the Guides of Poland? 80 Zloty is about £15.

Poland

The Polish Guide and Scout Association (Związek Harcerstwa Polskiego) has almost 50,000 female members and 35,000 scouts. Just like our members, the girls and young women in ZHP have the opportunity to develop their fullest potential as responsible citizens of the world through a fantastic Guiding programme. They learn valuable life skills, in particular leadership skills that are developed from an early age. As they get older this allows them to play a fuller part in Polish society as responsible adults and volunteers.

ZHP was a founder member of WAGGGS and having had to leave during the communist period, was re-admitted to WAGGGS in 1996. Since 1996 there has been a continual challenge to manage financially and in 2009 ZHP had to be suspended from WAGGGS. In the last two years, ZHP has gained a new leadership team, addressed their issues and are now close to having their suspension lifted. Throughout this time they have continued to offer great programmes for young people and high quality training and resources.

In order to clear their past debts with WAGGGS, ZHP have developed an 'Operation 80' campaign where people are asked to donate 80 Zloty. 80 Zloty is about £15. They are working hard to have members and supporters in Poland contribute to Operation 80.

As we are an international organisation membership offers the girls and young women of ZHP the opportunity to meet and learn with people from all cultures and countries in the world through international leadership events. These opportunities are not currently available to ZHP whilst they are suspended and they can not take place in the Europe Region conference next year.

There is an English language website developed by ZHP so please do take a look and see the fantastic activities they deliver. www.eng.zhp.pl

To give you some idea of what 80 Zloty buys, a monthly public transport card would cost 80 Zloty and a loaf of bread is 2-3Zloty. If you are able to make a small donation to support ZHP, please do so via the Guide Friendship Fund - for Poland.
