Patsy Stone and Eddie Monsoon (Eleanor Hoppe and Polly Hutchinson) do not run, darling. However, they have decided to take up a challenge to run a whopping 10 kilometres on 25th June 2011.
This is in order to support Eddie's decision to visit Belarus in July 2011 to volunteer at a Holiday Camp for children with disabilities caused by the effects of the Chernobyl disaster. The £450 needed is to help cover the costs of the much-needed recuperative holiday for the orphans who spend much of their lives in under-funded institutions in contaminated regions.
A small low-down on what happened and why this is such an important cause:
On 25th April 1986, no.4 nuclear reactor in Chernobyl, Ukraine exploded with devastating consequences. Much of the fallout fell over neighbouring Belarus, particularly in the Gomel region of the country, contaminating the environment.
Many children born in the region suffer from deformities and cancers caused by exposure to radiation whilst in the womb. Unlike other environmental disasters, this is not one that improve with time - the effects of radiation will last for generations.
We are running in support of Chernobyl's Children Project (UK) - a charity that provides recuperative holiday camps for Belorussian children affected by the disaster, allowing them some time to holiday in a clean, radiation-free environment outside of their poorly funded institutions.
You can find out more about the charity here: http://www.chernobyl-children.org.uk/
The terrible two will be in LaCroix and they will be fabulous.
Any contribution you could make, no matter how small, would be very gratefully received by the Project to help the holiday for the children the best it possibly can be.
Thank you.
