Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our Just Giving Page!

**Nepal Earthquake Appeal** We started this fundraising campaign as part of our trekking challenge to Everest Base Camp. The recent earthquake has devastated Nepal and has badly affected the Himalayan regions. We now hope to raise as much money as we can for the thousands of earthquake victims!

What are we doing?
In April 2015, we will be taking upon the challenge to trek for 12 days through the Himalayas, up to altitudes of 5,560 m (17,590 ft). Walking for approximately 140 km (87 miles), we are hoping to reach the Everest Base Camp.
As this will be quiet a big challenge for us, we thought that it will be a great opportunity to raise some money and give something back to the local mountainous communities of Nepal. We chose Community Action Nepal (CAN), a UK based charity, whose aim is to help the less fortunate people of the mountainous regions of Nepal.

About Nepal
Nepal lies between India and Tibet in Southern Asia. The Himalayas run through the length of the country and act as its northern border. Nepal is one of the world's poorest countries and the UN estimates that about 40% of Nepalis live in poverty. People's lives are physically very hard. Poverty is concentrated in rural mountain villages that are geographically isolated. In these remote mountain zones, the terrain is rugged, rainfall is low and the poor-quality soil is difficult to farm. Agricultural holdings per household are the smallest in the country. Half of the children under 5 years of age are undernourished. Most rural households have little or no access to primary healthcare, education, safe drinking water, sanitation or other basic services.

About CAN
CAN aims to provide long-term benefits to the poorer people living in the middle hill regions of Nepal by providing schools, teachers, health posts, nurses, clean water supplies and community development projects. CAN also endeavours to support and maintain the cultural heritage in each project area. It is estimated that their work has benefited approximately 250,000 people. At the moment CAN operates nine health posts, eight schools and three mountain porter rescue shelters. They try to not only help the people of Nepal, but to also help them, help themselves by encouraging a sense of ownership and responsibility for all projects and an active involvement.

Your Donations
Your contributions are not forming any part of the funding for the trip so 100% of the money that will be raised will be going directly to Community Action Nepal. Any donation will be greatly appreciated and incredibly worthwhile for such a great cause.

Thank you!
