"Bowel & Cancer Research is a charity that funds ground-breaking research into bowel cancer and other bowel diseases. The central vision of the charity is that no-one should die of bowel cancer, have to live with chronic bowel disease or face life with a permanent stoma."

It has to be said, bowels lack glamour. Sadly, what this means is that there is not enough funding going into bowel cancer or diseases and conditions which, though not life threatening, destroy people’s quality of life. The facts are not happy reading:

·        *  More than 40,000 people diagnosed annually with bowel cancer – it is the 3 most common cancer, diagnosed roughly every 15 minutes and taking a life every 30. Despite this it remains much less recognised than the other major cancers.

 

·         * Over 150,000 individuals living with colitis and Crohn’s Diseases – often beginning in childhood these are still LIFELONG diseases, with no hope of cure. Management can mean regular hospital visits for administration of morphine-like pain relief.

 

 

·        *  More than 100,000 people live with a stoma where waste is passed from the body through an opening in the abdomen. Stomas can save lives, but the impact on people physically, psychologically and emotionally can be devastating.
