The Harry Matthews Small Bowel Transplant Trust is a charity, which supports children who are listed for small bowel transplantation and their families.  The reason we have chosen this charity is that Stan the son of a friend of ours is affected by this and we give a little  of his story below.

Stan's Story

Stan is 15 years old and was diagnosed with a rare bowel disorder at only 6 months.  Having to be intravenously fed and after numerous operations, his only hope was a transplant.

When he was 7 years of age, he received an isolated small bowel transplant.  Due to serious complications post-transplant, he needed complex treatment, which included chemotherapy.  This resulted in complications to his liver and renal system and the difficult decision was made to re-list him for a second transplant, which would be a rarer and more complex procedure.

In December 2017, Stan received a multi-visceral transplant, which included the small bowel, colon, liver and pancreas. He had to spend endless months at a time in a hospital in London due to the complexities of the treatment.  This was a very difficult time for him and his family during which time they had very little support.

On a more positive note, Stan is now 6 months post receiving his new organs and although he still has a long way to go he is a real fighter and we are very hopeful this time that he will get a life he so deserves.
