Vision Aid Overseas has been helping some of the world’s poorest people to see clearly for over 30 years.
Without affordable eye care services, people living with poor eyesight often leave their condition untreated, and if left untreated long enough, can lead to permanent blindness. Whether you are a teacher in Ghana, a seamstress in Zambia or a school pupil in Ethiopia, poor eye sight can have a devastating impact on your life and livelihood.
So, I am travelling with a small team of people on an assignment to Sierra Leone where, in the Eastern Province of Kenema, we’ll be working to provide outreach to nearby towns and villages as well as working within a hospital, providing sight tests to people who otherwise go untested.
Outreach services target communities and individuals who may not have the means to seek help themselves. For people living in very remote communities, outreach services can be their only hope of improving poor eye sight and be a person's first ever experience in receiving eye care. Something alot of us take for granted. But not only do Vision Aid Overseas put donations towards doing out reach. They put donations towards:
- Training and Education: for countries to become self-sufficient. There are currently only two Optometrists to a population of seven million in Sierra Leone.
- Vision Centres: A major element of their work is the development of sustainable Vision Centres where patients can receive a free walk-in eye test, purchase an affordable pair of glasses to correct their vision or, if necessary, be referred for further specialist treatment.
- Children's Eye Health: they are working with the Ministries of Health and Education in their programme countries to integrate child eye care screening into the National Health Plans.
Please help me make a small difference and sponsor the cause, any amount, big or small, would be appreciated.
