Bridlington Priory was a popular pilgrimage centre in the Middle Ages, well-known for its shrine to the 14 century saint ‘John of Bridlington’. Pilgrims as famous as King Henry V made the journey to the Priory, one of the earliest Augustinian houses in England, where he gave thanks at the shrine for his victory at Agincourt.
This year Bridlington Priory celebrates 900 years since its foundation, and as part of a festival of special events we have organised a modern, 21st century pilgrimage to revive this tradition.
The Priory 900 ‘Pilgrimage for All’ is a 70 mile walk from York Minster to Bridlington Priory across the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds over the course of seven days (22 – 28 August), with stops at areas of historical interest.
The Pilgrimage is open to everyone, whether it’s for fun, a devotional exercise or simply for the pleasure of the journey and good company - and it would mean a great deal to us to raise money for a fantastic cause along the way. Whether someone you know is taking part in the Pilgrimage or you would just like to support us, we are grateful for anything you can give to our chosen charity (Excellent, Pioneers of Sand Dams) on our behalf.
If you intend to participate in the Pilgrimage as an individual or as part of a group, you can find everything you will need to apply online on the Priory 900 website (www.priory900.org/events/pilgrimage-for-all). Please note that application prior to the event is essential; you will take part in the event at your own risk and will be responsible for your own accommodation and travel.
