Story
The leading children’s and young people’s cancer charity, CLIC Sargent is looking for daredevils to take part in an adrenalin-fuelled abseil in Nottingham to raise money for children and young people with cancer.
The so-called Last Chance Abseil will see dozens of brave souls descend a nail-biting 85ft from the Queen’s Medical Centre, Sunday 13th July. Named the ‘Last Chance’ Abseil as this will be the final chance to abseil at the QMC for CLIC Sargent.
One of the participants already registered to take part in this event is local mum, Hayley Ruddy.
When Hayley from Giltbroook’s 9 week old son Joey began to show bruising earlier this year, both Mum and Dad, knew that something was wrong. In March, they received the devastating news that Joey had leukaemia. Joey has just finished his second course of chemotherapy, and is currently waiting for a bone marrow transplant.
Since being diagnosed Joey has spent all but 2 weeks in hospital. Throughout this time, children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent has been on hand with the offer of support and a listening ear. Hayley said, "My CLIC Sargent funded social worker Tamsin is just there for me. Whether I am feeling doubtful or the doctors are using big medical words that I don’t understand, Tamsin is there to explain what’s happening. We are also grateful for the financial support that the charity has given to us".
Hayley is taking part in the abseil as she says that she would like to give something back. Hayley is also urging others to take part in the abseil as a way of raising money for CLIC Sargent. Hayley goes on to say "I would like other families to be able to receive the same kind of support that we have".
Nichola Doran, Regional Fundraising Manager at CLIC Sargent says: "Taking part in the QMC Abseil s a great way to challenge yourself and help make a difference to the lives of children like Joey. I would encourage people to sign up as soon as possible, as places are limited."
The abseil is open to anyone aged 16 or over and people can take part individually or in teams. Each participant is required to pay a registration fee of £15 and raise a minimum of £150 sponsorship.
CLIC Sargent provides clinical, practical and emotional support for children and young people with cancer, and their families, from the point of diagnosis. All proceeds from the abseil will help CLIC Sargent provide vital services, including nurses and care professionals in hospital, grants to help families meet extra costs and free ‘Home from Home’ accommodation close to the main children’s cancer centres, including Billy’s House opposite the QMC.
