When life gets tough or it feels like there's nowhere to turn, Barnardo's is here. We make sure children and young people feel safer, happier and more hopeful by directly supporting them with specialist services across the UK. We have been changing childhoods and changing lives for over 150 years.

Story

UPDATE - On Thursday 4th July students from the Central Lancaster High School completed a climb to the summit of Snowdon where, even though there were some weary legs, they managed to take part in a boxing session to raise money for Young Carers across Lancashire as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award - #Padsatthepeak!

Thank you to everybody who donated and helped them to smash their target of £1000, on the day they also managed to raise over £50 in donations from other walkers on the mountain which is fantastic! it will help to make a huge difference to the lives of young carers in Lancashire so please keep up the generosity and keep giving!

We have to say a massive "THANK YOU" to Richard "Rusty" Bale from  https://www.snowdoniawalkingandclimbing.co.uk/ for volunteering his services as Mountain Leader for the day!

The students have been taking part in a programme of Alternative Provision since January and have worked towards a number of qualifications including England Boxing JBO Award, AQA Unit Awards, John Muir Trust Award and Outdoor Discovery Award. They are now working extremely hard towards their DofE Bronze and as part of this they have to dedicate time to help people, the community or society, the environment or animals and as such have decided to raise money for a charity close to their hearts; Lancashire Young Carers. Barnardo's have been commissioned by Lancashire County Council to deliver support to young carers aged up to 18 across Lancashire and will be the recipient of any funds raised to support with the delivery of activities and respite care to young people throughout the authority.

"Young carers are children and young people under the age of 18 who provide regular and ongoing care and emotional support to a family member who is physically ill, disabled or misuses substances. This does not apply to the everyday and occasional help around the home that may often be expected of or given by children in families."

Based on Census figures there are estimated to be at least 376,000 young adult carers in the UK aged 16–25 with recent figures indicate that there are around 4,000 children and young people who are providing care in Lancashire, with some of our own group of students having taken on a caring role themselves they understand first-hand how difficult caring responsibility can be at such a young age.

Any donations towards our target of £1000 will make a massive difference to the lives of young people and, in the words of one of our students, "will enable the kids to be kids!"
