Kiln Sierra Leone Marathon · 9 June 2012 ·

Street Child's purpose is to see all children safe, in school and learning - especially in low-resource environments and emergencies. We work with an expanding network of local organisations for lasting impact in over 20 of the world’s toughest countries across sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Europe.

Story

This year, Kiln is celebrating its 50 anniversary and it is with great pride that we acknowledge how Kiln has developed in that time. Whilst turning 50 is itself a cause for celebration, it is also an opportunity for us to look at other areas where the past 50 years have been less kind, which led us to Sierra Leone – a country that was ranked the world’s poorest in 2008.

Sierra Leone is celebrating its Golden Jubilee year following 50 years of independence. However, whilst the country has changed considerably since the brutal civil war, it still faces the challenge of reconstruction. It is estimated that more than 48,000 children are living and working on its streets without the support of any family or an education. More than half of the population is under 18 years of age and only 40% of its people are literate.

That is why, sharing the same anniversary, Kiln has decided to sponsor this groundbreaking marathon in Makeni, Sierra Leone. The money raised will provide a desperately needed financial boost to enable the charity to build 50 schools, reunite 500 girls and 500 boys with their families, and support 5,000 impoverished street children through education.  It will also empower the people of Sierra Leone to help themselves and develop their economy, ensuring that future generations suffer less hardship and turmoil.

This is an exciting opportunity for the insurance market to play its own small part in supporting Sierra Leone on its road to prosperity. Your help, through your sponsorship of the runners, your decision to run yourself or your donations, will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
