Story

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2011 and it was one of the most difficult challenges I have faced.  Aged 26, it was one of the rarest forms of breast cancer and believed to be sporadic.  I couldn't accept the diagnosis at first especially as I felt well, enjoyed regular exercise every week and had no risk factors.  The idea of facing my own mortality and the implications it brought were unbearable.  All my plans on life and work were halted.

Being a doctor made each stage a struggle, understanding the risks and benefits of every operation and drug I took.  I even emailed the consultant histopathologist obscure medical articles I spent hours researching, in hope it was just a mistake.  The transition from being a doctor to patient was hard.

The medical team were amazing and after two operations and some lymph nodes removed, I am clear of the cancer.  I'll be taking some drugs for the next few years and on course to start radiotherapy soon but I am OK!  Recovering from the operations have been frustrating, especially if you know me well, how I like to juggle every possible thing into one day and live a hectic life.  There's always room to do something else!  But this peroid has given me forced time to relax, to catch up with friends and my facebook useage has increased by 500%! :-)

This is why I am running Race for Life.  I am running this for my family, my friends and every one who has had cancer or who has been affected by it.  It will be a priviledge to run alongside fellow woman.  I will eternally be indebted to the people who have got me through this, you know who you are and I love you very much.

I wanted to share my story to raise awareness, to promote healthy living and raise loads of money to cancer research.  Life really is so short, go for check ups, reguarly examine yourselves (includes you too boys down below)  and exercise!  Make up with loved ones, apologise even if it wasn't your mistake.  The benefits far outweigh swallowed pride.

Cancer can affect anyone and any age.  I'm not special and don't feel hard done by this experience, it has only made me stronger with an overriding desire to help others in similar situations.  Millions of people have to go through this every day.

Please give whatever you can, I would be so happy for any amount.  All monies will go towards the incredible research into preventing, diagnosing, using new surgical techniques, new medications and support for those who have or will go through cancer.

(If you are a UK taxpayer, please remember to tick the Gift Aid box when donating as this will increase your donation by at least 25% at no cost to you).

Thank-you so much for your support. Together we will beat cancer.
